How I got into Custo'ing

The short story as to how I got started on customizing my desktop: Well first off, I knew right off the bat that Windows was as ugly as sin. So I experiented with Windows' default options. And it was too limiting. I suppose you could just say that I'm a control freak.. but I want my Windows to look how I want it to look and function how I want it. And take out whatever I don't need, which is a darn lot.

Basically, I've been a fan of minimalistic desktops since the beginning of my customizing days. And that was BEFORE the trend came out. Same goes with black and white desktops; BEFORE the trend. At the beginning, my main influences were WinT and Aero. But now more have been added onto my fave custo'ers list.

So how did I stumble upon WinT? I was already fast becoming a top notch Googler, and if I remember correctly, the first thing I deemed so unbelievably ugly that it needed to DIE was the windows flag throbber. And upon Googling that, I found WinT's website. Wandered around there trying out all his hacks, lurked for a while, and then finally joined up at WinMod and Virtual Plastic

Stayed there for quite a while. Learned from all those folk. Began growing, making screen shots, picking up tricks. All three sites introduced me into this world and made me grow; it's a darn shame they are so not well-known now.

After a year or so of that, I finally got up the courage to join Custo, because we were all kinda scared of it. They were "The Elite" in the modding world. Not many of us ventured there. And if they did, not many stayed. I actually came from the older more classic modding scene, but people on custo don't know that I suppose. And we were our own little world, so I don't know what the rest of the customizing scene was like at the time.

So to sum up, unless I've forgotten something I'll add when I remember, I had been into the customizing scene for a possible 1-2 years before I joined up on Custo. And the rest is history that you can track on my profile there really, I doubt this story did more than bore you though. ;)

How important details are

I simply must get this out; details are very important to me. If I make it so my Foobar displays the song that's now playing in caps instead of a different color I'm happy about that. If I change some other seemingly minute detail, I'll tell people because I'm happy about it. Other people may not care about that sort of thing; but I think it's the details that make up a good screen shot. And I think a lot of people would agree with me as well.

Top 12 fave custo'ers

In alphabetical order using bullets, so there is no possible way you could get upset about being low on it. And to make sure, this is not a countdown showing where people rank. However my list is of course subject to change, but I seriously doubt I'd remove anyone, just add people.

  • Internet Pet Peeves

I absolutely HATE when people use terrible spelling and grammar. Like "hi ur kewl plz giv me that mod & do tht thng 4 me" I mean c'mon, can you please try to sound half-way intelligent? As I've found out that is known as "chat speak" I think, whatever it is, it is bloody stupid. And ya know what? So is dropping your vowels, just as equally annoying and stupid.

I really hate it when people are sleeping, at work/school, or just plain away in IRC and don't change their nick to 'name|sleep' or something to that effect. You never know who's there and who isn't.

And almost more than the two previously mentioned, I HATE when people go to a random forum and post a question about a TREMENDOUSLY easy thing that they don't know because they're too stupid to Google for answers OR just want some one to tell them quickly because their to lazy to go find out for themselves.

A new pet peeve I've just come in contact with, that I'd previously forgotten is people who pronounce acronyms phonetically. Like people saying A-SAP instead of A.S.A.P. (Aye ess aye pee) or JPEG (Jay peg) instead of JPG (Jay pee gee) I dunno, it just bugs me dang it.

This one should be especially annoying to every one. I hate when people have previews for downloads (skins) that don't act as a preview for it AT ALL!

Ya know I know it looks cool to put Email(at)gmail(dot)com and all, but bloody heck is it dang annoying!! Ya can't just quickly copy and paste, ya gotta go and change it back to @'s and .'s. And that bugs me. A lot. I suppose that one really doesn't count anymore -- since now I do it too. But, it is supposed to stop spambots.

    Real Pet Peeves

Wow, I'm actually putting real pet peeves in now. Ok a big 'ol huge one of mine is people who smack their lips or chew loudly, and either don't know about it or refuse to stop. Because everyone can eat with their mouth closed. EVEN if you can't breathe, I've proven it.

I really hate when ya meet someone and you both seem to get on quite well, and you give them your number. And they never call you. And you can't call them 'cause you didn't get theirs. And if you did, and lose it, then it's even worse -- well on your end.

Eh, I'll put more as I think of them.
